A family in Mangalsen Municipality-5 of Achham has been without food and sleep since Monday, Jestha 25. After 30-year-old Rebant Bista, who had been living in Kirtipur, Kathmandu for the past 3 years to prepare for the Public Service Commission exam, suddenly disappeared, his family is in shock and tears.
It has been 17 days since he went missing as of Thursday (today). No one has been able to get even a simple clue about his whereabouts and condition. For the past 17 days, his mother Surjadevi Bista, father Prem Bista and sister Janaki have been waiting for good news that Rebant has been found.
Mother Surjadevi Bista, who is worried about her son, faints from time to time. When she wakes up, only one word comes out of her mouth, 'I hoped that the eldest son will return, he will become a savior in old age.' But where did he go? It has become difficult for me to live. The government should have found my son. The village is shocked by the mother's cries. The condition of his father Prem Bista, who is struggling with mental health problems, is even more critical. Amid the bedridden father and the fainting mother, Rebant's brother Chhatra Bista is wandering the streets, police stations and possible places in Kathmandu in search of his brother.
Chhatra, who is in Kathmandu, has not stopped knocking on the doors of the police, locals and friends. According to the police, the last location of Rebant's mobile was seen in the Sitapaila area. After that, his phone has been switched off. 'I registered a petition asking for a search in the Kirtipur circle.' The DSP there and the police of Bhadrakali Police Station had assured that they would send emails to police posts and offices outside Kathmandu,' said Chhatra, 'Later, when I went to Chitwan and Hetauda Police Offices to inquire, no emails or news had arrived. It would have been better if they had said that we cannot and will not do it. They only gave assurances.'
Afflicted by the administration's delay and neglect, Chhatra added, 'Many say that this matter should be conveyed to the Home Minister. I tried to meet the Home Minister several times, but I could not find time. I am now experiencing that only those whose people are in power and reach get support from the police administration and the state. There is no one to make the voices of the poor and inaccessible like us heard.'
He complained that the police made technical excuses and avoided him even when he repeatedly requested to see the CCTV footage of Kirtipur and Sitapaila areas. ‘Some places say CCTV does not work . Some answer that the record is only for 3 days and 7 days . We asked the police to follow the CCTV footage of where my brother went after he left the room, but we did not get any concrete help.’
While searching for his brother, Chhatra had almost run out of money. He said that even with the help from relatives and friends, more than 150,000 rupees had been spent. Chhatra, who has been searching for his brother after taking out a loan, has no other option left . ‘My parents are struggling at home . Meanwhile, I am wandering around looking for my brother in search of a loan. For the first 2-3 days, everyone acted as if they were there, but now no one is there,’ he said, ‘I will sell my bike and laptop and see how many days I can survive . If nothing happens after this, there is no option but to return home . I feel very lonely and weak as I have not found anything from anywhere for so many days.'
Rebant, who was sharp in his studies, always stood first in class 10. He tried to go to Dhangadhi to study science, but could not continue due to poverty. He returned home disappointed. Later, brother Chhatra had started preparing him for the civil service in Kirtipur with the money he earned by driving a bus and a cart in Kathmandu. In the meantime, they looked for work in many places but could not find any.
The day after Rebant went missing, i.e. on Jestha 26, Chhatra had filed a search application with the Kirtipur Police Circle. However, the police's slow investigation process has further increased the family's anxiety. DSP Shiv Kumar Budhathoki of Kirtipur Police Circle said that the search is continuing. 'We are continuing the search.' We have already searched all possible places including Nagarjuna, Sitapaila, Pharping, along with the relatives of the victim. We are also investigating from a technical perspective,' DSP Budhathoki said.
