Qatar has said that Nepali workers were also injured in the explosion and fire that occurred at the Barjan gas supply center in the Ras Laffan industrial area on Sunday night.
It was reported that 13 people were killed and 66 were injured in the incident. The number and identities of the injured Nepalis have not been made public. Qatari officials have said that the dead in the accident are Indian and Pakistani nationals.
Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and Chairman and CEO of Qatar Energy, informed a press conference held in Doha on Monday that the injured include Nepalis, Qataris, Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Kenyans, Ghanaians, Tanzanians and Nigerians. He said that none of the injured were in serious condition.
Amid growing concern about the condition of Nepali workers working in Qatar after the accident, Qatari officials have said that the condition of all the injured, including the injured Nepali, is stable.
Al-Kaabi expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
Qatar Energy said the Barzan plant had been closed for urgent maintenance since December 2025. It had only been brought back into operation two days before the accident. Al-Kaabi described the incident as an operational accident and clarified that there was no sabotage or hostile activity involved. “Qatar Energy’s emergency rescue team and Qatar Civil Defense quickly brought the fire under control,” he said.
Qatar Energy said the incident did not affect the LNG production facility, Ras Laffan port, export systems or other supply networks. The company said damage assessment and investigation are ongoing.
Al-Kaabi claimed that Qatar has sufficient gas reserves and alternative supply capacity, so there will be no problems with exports and domestic supplies.
