Nepali Congress leader and former minister Rajendra Kharel passed away on Sunday night at the age of 80. He passed away at 9:45 pm at the Frontline Hospital in Baneshwor during treatment, the Nepali Congress has said.
Kharel's body was kept at the Nepali Congress Central Office, BP Nagar, Lalitpur for tributes from 9 am to 11:45 am on Monday. His funeral is scheduled to be held at Pashupati Aryaghat on Monday at 1 pm.
Born in Kharelthok, Kavrepalanchok in 2003 BS, Kharel was known as a long-time leader of the Nepali Congress and an active fighter of the democratic movement. The stepchild of Subba Devi Prasad and Mukunda Kumari Kharel, he was arrested several times during the democratic movement in Nepal and spent nearly nine years in jail.
He made significant contributions to building the party organization in close collaboration with Jannayak BP Koirala, Ganeshman Singh and Krishna Prasad Bhattarai. From 2049 to 2053 Asad, the central office of the Nepali Congress was operated from his residence in Baneshwor.
Kharel was the Nepali Congress candidate from Kavrepalanchok House of Representatives Constituency No. 3 in the general elections of 2048, 2051, 2056 and 2064 BS. After being elected in the 2056 BS elections, he held the responsibilities of Minister of State for Education and Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare.
The party has stated that he contributed to the building of the organization and strengthening of the democratic system by holding various responsibilities in the Congress. He has three sons, Krishna Chandra, Mahesh and Shailesh Kharel. Mahesh Kharel is currently the mayor of Panchkhal Municipality and the regional president of Nepali Congress Kavrepalanchok Constituency No. 2.
Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has expressed deep sorrow over Kharel's death. In his tribute message, he remembered Kharel as a tireless warrior of the democratic movement, a loyal and experienced politician, and said that his sacrifice, dedication and struggle will always be remembered in the history of the party.
