Although the convention venue has changed over time, Chitwan continues to have the opportunity to witness important moments of parties that have an impact on national politics.

Chitwan, located almost in the center of the country, has been selected for major programs such as general conventions of political parties. The National Independent Party (NISP), which came to power with a huge public vote in the last election, has also chosen Chitwan for its general convention. The first general convention of the NISP is being held from 20 to 21 June.
Earlier, in November 2078, the CPN-UML held its tenth national convention in Chitwan. The general convention of the Unity Center, formed by the unification of various communist components, was also held here in November 2048. The Maoists were formed due to a split in the Unity Center. The first conference of the Maoists was also held in Chitwan.
The communist components, whose political program was the goal of ending the monarchy and armed struggle, adopted an underground style during the general convention in 2048 BS. When the general convention of the Unity Center was held 34 years ago, the government agencies had to resort to many tricks to prevent the program from getting a taste of it. At that time, a convention was held in Sheetalpur, a southern corner of Madi, in the southern part of Chitwan. Gopilal Devkota, who was a member of the convention management committee, currently lives in Bharatpur.
His home was previously in Sheetalpur. He said that he went to the forest to collect thatch, wooden poles, poles and thatch for the roof to prepare the tent for the convention. To reach Sheetalpur, he had to go inland from Chirauli, about 40 kilometers south of Bharatpur. The convention was scheduled for November. Devkota said that he had started collecting materials for the tent by going to the forest for a month.
‘We used to cut poles, thatch and thatch for the roof in the forest. We did not bring them to the village. There was a discussion about why we brought them and what we did with them. That is why we kept them in the forest, and we started building the tent only the day before the convention,’ Devkota said.
The then communist components of the CPN (Chaum), CPN (Masal), the Proletarian Workers' Organization, the CPN (Masal) led by Baburam Bhattarai, and the CPN Janamukhi were formed to form the Unity Center. The convention of the party, which had famous leaders like Nirmala Lama, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, and Ruplal Bishwakarma, ended on 16 Mangs. But with the unification of the party, differences of opinion began.
After ideological differences began, 19 out of the 37 central members of the Unity Center formed the CPN Maoist, said the then central member of the Unity Center, Phanindra Acharya. Acharya joined the CPN Maoist, which was formed under the leadership of Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Acharya said that the conference to name the party Maoist was also held in Jestha 2051 at a poultry farm in Jyamire, East Chitwan. Armed struggle began on 1 Falgun 2052 under the leadership of the same party (Maoist).
The Nepal Communist Party had chosen Chitwan to hold its third general convention. According to retired history professor Rajendra Prasad Regmi, who has researched the communist history of Chitwan, the Nepal Communist Party's central committee meeting held in Bhadra, 2017 had decided to hold the party's third general convention from 7 Falgun 2017 in Narayangadh, Chitwan. However, the general convention could not be held in Chitwan after King Mahendra had already overthrown the elected government on 1 Poush, dissolved the parliament and imposed a ban on the party.
UML organized its 10th general convention in Chitwan from 10 to 12 Magh in 2078. The inaugural program of the UML general convention was held on the banks of the Narayani River in Narayangadh and the closing session was held in the tourist area of Sauraha. People came to the inaugural program covering the banks of the Narayani River. A huge stage that could accommodate five hundred people and a large digital display board were placed at the venue.
The venue for the closing session in Sauraha was also prepared by putting up tents. UML leader Binod Shrestha had informed at the time that Rs 5 million was spent on the construction of the stage on both sides. UML's then district president Parbati Rawal recalled that the UML had given a small boost to the tourism industry, which had slowed down due to Corona, by holding the general convention in Chitwan. 'Holding it in Butwal means that we insisted on holding the general convention in Chitwan. The political program was also an opportunity to connect with tourism at that time,' says leader Rawal.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has also completed preparations for the general convention to be held in Chitwan from Sunday. The biggest challenge at this time for the party's inauguration and closing session is the rain and heat. Initially, it was decided to hold the program in the open courtyard of Hotel Star in Ratnanagar Tandi by setting up a bamboo pavilion. But later, citing security and other reasons, it was decided to hold it in Bharatpur. The closing session is being held at the Chitwan Industry Association Exhibition Center in Bharatpur. Since there is a permanent structure, there is no problem with the heat and rain there.
A strong tent 'German Hanger' has been arranged to protect the participants from the sun and rain at the inauguration program to be held at the open space Guesthouse Chaur in front of the District Police Office, Chitwan. 'German Hanger' was brought to Nepal eight years ago by Media Space Solutions. It has been used in national and international exhibitions and party general conventions. 'German Hanger' is a temporary but strong tent.
The aluminum structure has a 'tensile fabric' roof. This will protect it from sun, rain, wind and fire. According to Shreejal Bhattarai, Managing Director of Media Space Solutions, a 'hanger' has been prepared at the inauguration venue with five thousand chairs and a place to sit without chairs.
About 1,500 hotel rooms are required for the delegates coming to the general convention, said Rajan Gautam, central member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and coordinator of the accommodation and food subcommittee. He informed that since there are not many hotels in Bharatpur, the delegates will be accommodated in hotels in Sauraha and other areas of the district. According to Gautam, the delegates will bear the hotel expenses themselves. The party will manage the food and refreshments.
Preparations are being made to mobilize 1,500 security personnel for the security of the convention. Chitwan Police Chief SP Rameshwor Poudel informed that 165 traffic police will be deployed for traffic management.
DR Pokharel, who is active in social studies research in Chitwan, says that the place will be in the eyes of the political leadership when the convention is held. ‘The leadership prepared from where the convention is held and the entire party ranks always take care of that place. Therefore, having the convention in Chitwan is good for this place,’ Pokharel said.
