The Turtle Rescue and Conservation Center in Arjundhara Municipality-9 has protected 10 species of turtles.

As nearly 80 percent of the turtle species found in the country are at risk of extinction, the center has mobilized staff to protect turtles.

Established in Jhapa in 2012 in collaboration with the Sukhani Martyrs Memorial Foundation and 'ARCO Nepal', this center currently protects more than 50 percent of the total species found in the country, that is, about 50 turtles of 10 species. Since 2020, the center has also successfully bred the critically endangered ground turtle (Thotari) and rehabilitated the rescued turtles in their natural habitat.

Tapil Prakash Rai, a representative of the Turtle Rescue and Conservation Center, said that turtles are being protected because they play an important role in biodiversity and ecosystem balance. 'Turtles living in water and on land help in the food chain,' he said.

He said that land turtles help spread plant seeds and wetland turtles help purify water by eating unhealthy organisms. He also urged people to immediately report any turtles to the Division Forest Office or Conservation Center.
