The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) is to hold a protest in Maitighar Mandal on Friday to protest against the government's efforts to curb civil rights and press freedom. The 'Professional Network for Peace and Democracy' (PAPAD) has called for participation in the protest.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 'PAPAD' said that it has drawn serious attention to the political, constitutional and administrative activities that have been developing in the country recently. In the name of good governance, PAPAD mentioned that there is an increasing tendency to weaken the institutional balance, affect the independence and impartiality of the judiciary, reduce the effective role of parliament and try to evade accountability.
PAPAD also objected to the efforts to create economic and policy pressure on freedom of the press and expression, the right to information and the media. According to PAPAD, such activities will weaken democratic practices and increase the risk of curtailing civil rights. 'Democracy is not just about majority rule achieved through elections, but rather a system based on the supremacy of the constitution, balanced use of power, institutional accountability, freedom of expression, right to information, transparency, civil liberties and the rule of law,' the statement said.
The statement noted that interference in the autonomy of universities, policy ambiguity and indifference in basic areas such as education and health are having an adverse impact on the livelihood, employment, business and dignified living of the common citizen.
The government has been urged to move forward in accordance with the letter and spirit of citizen supremacy, human rights, international law and the constitution. It has also appealed to democratic forces, professional organizations, the media sector, the academic community and civil society to unite to protect democratic values, the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary, freedom of the press, civil rights and institutional balance.
Nepal Medical Association, Nepal Federation of Journalists, Nepal Bar Association, Nepal Professors Association, Nepal Teachers Federation and Nepal Engineers Association are affiliated with PAPAD.
