The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has intensified disaster response preparations targeting the upcoming monsoon.
Pradeep Kumar Koirala, the executive chief of the authority, said that it is necessary to fully engage in the response, keeping in mind the monsoon-related risks, within about a week.
‘The Department of Water and Meteorology has given us the monsoon forecast. This year's forecast says that there will be less than average rainfall, but there may be more rainfall in some places. When it says that there will be more rainfall in one place, it becomes sensitive in terms of disaster,' he said, 'The authority is preparing how to mitigate it. We have assigned the responsibility of leading various ministries as cluster leads and co-leads, and they have made their own preparations.' He said that the provincial government and local levels will have more responsibility in this.
'We will now have to engage in the response from about next week. The Home Minister has instructed that everyone should keep updated records of the disaster and engage in the response by improving the coordination mechanism,' he said.
He said that a mechanism for cooperation between government and non-government bodies has also been prepared by integrating the non-governmental sector.
The Authority had discussed the preparedness for monsoon-related disasters in the presence of Home Minister Sudhan Gurung on Thursday. Koirala said that the Home Minister's main directive is focused on minimizing the loss of life and property. According to him, the Home Minister had directed all bodies to maintain regular updated records of disaster incidents, strengthen the information system and make the coordination mechanism effective.
