Police have received permission to detain Santosh Shah, the owner of Mithila Thali, popularly known as Chef Santosh, for at least 3 days.
The police had produced him before the District Court, Kathmandu, seeking a remand for investigation into a fraud-related offence. In the meantime, SP Pawan Bhattarai of the District Police Range, Kathmandu, told Kantipur that the court had allowed him to be detained for three days.
The Valley Crime Investigation Office of the police had arrested Shah in Janakpur on charges of banking offences and brought him to Kathmandu. And, he was handed over to the District Police Range, Bhadrakali for further investigation. ‘There has been an order from the court in the banking offence, we are making him appear in it on Monday,’ he said.
Along with Santosh, the police had also arrested Narayan Shah Sudi, another owner of the same restaurant. Both the cases are related to the restaurant he tried to run illegally. The complainant, Shakuntala Thapa, had sold a restaurant in Gairidhara to Sah for Rs 13 million.
Sah had given a check for that. When he tried to withdraw the money, the check bounced. The police say that this issue has been discussed between the two parties several times before.
However, after the time passed without agreement, a case was filed in the court. Later, a case was also registered with the police for fraud. Santosh is a leading Nepali chef who introduced Nepali cuisine to the world. In 2021, he became a BBC Master Chef.
