Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has decided to proceed with the investigation into the palace massacre. After assuming office as the Home Minister on Tuesday, he has made four decisions, the second of which is to proceed with the palace massacre file.

The palace massacre took place on 19 Jestha 2058. The palace massacre killed the then King Birendra Shah, Queen Aishwarya Shah, Crown Prince Dipendra Shah and others. After the murder of King Birendra's entire family, his brother Gyanendra Shah became king.

According to Gurung, the first decision was to form a special task force to study whether the criminal cases registered in the Gen-G movement related incidents can be withdrawn or not.

‘Third, to form a Sensitive Information Vigilance Team (SIVT) in the security agencies to closely monitor and take action to prevent incidents of sensitive information leakage from the Ministry of Home Affairs and security agencies,’ he said. ‘Fourth, to make the Central Investigation Bureau under the Nepal Police more powerful and effective and to direct the immediate conclusion of the investigation files currently in process.’

The decision also mentions the formation of a specialized group according to the nature of the case to investigate serious cases, including heinous economic organized crimes, in the bureau. After taking office as the Home Minister, he said, ‘Many people must be happy, many must be sad.’

Stating that he has been accused of many things since the Gen-G movement, he said, ‘I can bear it, but from now on, if anyone tries to insult or character-kill any citizen of Nepal, the Home Ministry will be very sensitive to it and will look into this matter seriously.’

He said that no matter what he says, no matter what accusations are made against him, he can bear it, but he cannot see other Nepali citizens being hurt. ‘The Home Ministry is very serious about the way in which daughters and sons are being character-killed,’ he added, ‘No one should commit suicide in the name of a media trial.’

He also said in another context that every file will be opened. After the investigation committee submitted its report on Friday, Prime Minister Balendra Shah recommended to President Ram Chandra Poudel to re-appoint him as the Home Minister after two months. And, at 5 pm, he took the oath of office and secrecy.
