The special court has remanded in custody Rewant Khadka, a clerk at the Tribhuvan Airport Customs Office, who is accused of smuggling gold through BHP.

The special court sent him to custody for remand after a hearing on Friday.

A corruption case was filed against him on charges of exchanging gold hidden inside a suitcase for electronic cigarettes (vapes).

The bench of special court chairman Sudarshan Dev Bhatt and members Hemanta Rawal and Vidur Koirala refused to release Khadka on bail.

Nasu Khadka, who was in charge of storing the seized suitcase in the warehouse, had exchanged it for another vape suitcase after learning that it contained gold. The charge sheet states that he took the gold he took out from there to New Road and sold it. He is an accused who has been convicted in a gold smuggling case filed earlier.

The CIAA had filed a case against Khadka, former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara and his son Rahul, and others on charges of corruption by aiding in gold smuggling. Mahara was released on bail a few days ago.

He was remanded in custody after being produced before a special court in the same case.
