Madhesh Province MP and former Minister of State Saroj Kumar Singh has been found guilty in a corruption case. The special court has found Singh guilty and sentenced him to 4 years and 1 month in prison and a fine of Rs 38,50,100.

The bench of Special Court Judges Surdashandev Bhatta, Umesh Koirala and Vidur Koirala delivered the verdict on Tuesday. The court has also decided to pay Rs 154,000 as compensation.

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority had filed a corruption case against Singh, a MP from Madhesh Province of the Nepali Congress (NCP), on 16 October 2005. Singh, who is also a former Minister of State for Madhesh Province, had claimed a fine of Rs 38,50,319.

Madhesh Pradesh Assembly member Singh, who formed various consumer committees to run development schemes in various wards, allegedly siphoned off Rs 38,50,319 from the amount deposited/entered in the accounts of the consumer committees through his personal secretary Binod Kumar Lal Kayastha and deposited the amount in a joint account in the name of himself and his wife.

The special court that found Singh guilty on Jestha 4th announced the verdict on the sentencing today. The CIAA, along with Singh, Ramesh Madar, Amlesh Kumari, Diparaj Devi Rajput, Bhikhari Raut Kurmi, Bhupendra Kumar Jha, Manju Devi Pasman, Ramnath Sahni, Sikriti Devi alias Sankshanti Devi, Ramsharan Khatve, Bibha Devi Khatve, Shambhu Kumar Mandal, Yogindra Mahato, Sunayana Kumari, Yamuna Prasad Mahato and Kaushilya Devi were made defendants in the case.

Singh had demanded a bribe for the work done through the Maisthan Temple Beautification Consumers' Committee.

The commission had taken bribes from Manjudevi Pasman, treasurer of the Road Gravel Construction Consumers' Committee from Radhwa Pipal to Sahasaula Anerbhat, Janata Pravi to Laxminiya, and the Road Upgradation Construction Consumers' Committee from Radhwa Pipal to Anerbhat.
