Ruling National Independent Party (NISP) President Ravi Lamichhane arrived in Delhi on Monday afternoon for a five-day visit to India. Lamichhane is on a five-day visit to India at the invitation of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President Nitin Naveen.

Lamichhane was welcomed by BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh and Foreign Department Chief Vijay Chauthaiwale at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. Acting Nepali Ambassador to India Surendra Thapa and embassy officials were also at the airport to welcome the president. The visiting team includes party leader Lamichhane's wife Nikita Poudel, Joint General Secretary Bipin Acharya, Secretariat member Deepak Bohara and Personal Secretary Pradeep Acharya.

The BJP has said that the visit has been planned with the aim of strengthening party relations between the NISP and the BJP. President Lamichhane is scheduled to meet party office bearers including BJP President Naveen at the BJP headquarters on Deendayal Marg in Delhi on Tuesday. Lamichhane's formal meeting and program will begin from the BJP office. The Lamichhane-led team will spend time at the BJP office from 10 am to noon. During that time, the BJP's foreign department will make a presentation to the RSPB team on the party's organizational structure, office, department, etc. After the party-level program, sources say that President Lamichhane and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will meet. According to sources, Lamichhane will also meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Although the press release issued by the RSPB and BJP mentions Lamichhane's high-level political and diplomatic meeting, it does not disclose who he will meet. The press release issued by the BJP's foreign department on Sunday mentions that he will meet with top party leaders, but it does not disclose who he will meet. Similarly, the RSPB has also mentioned in its press release that the President will only hold high-level political and diplomatic meetings while in Delhi. According to embassy sources, officials from the Nepali Embassy in Delhi will also participate in the meeting with government officials. Embassy officials will not be present at meetings held at hotels or party offices.

President Lamichhane is on a visit to India two months after the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) formed the government after winning nearly two-thirds of the seats in the February 21 House of Representatives elections.

Lamichhane's visit to India is being viewed with interest in diplomatic circles amid growing distrust between Nepal and India over the border issue. It is expected that the high-level political meetings held during Lamichhane's visit will facilitate some of the issues between the two countries. President Lamichhane will participate in a program for expatriate Nepalis on Thursday. After that, he is scheduled to travel to Ayodhya.
