The special court has ordered a bail of Rs 100,000 from former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara.

The court has sought bail from Mahara in a corruption case filed in a special court on charges of smuggling gold through electronic cigarettes.

The bench of judges Sudarshan Dev Bhatta and Bidur Koirala of the special court has sought bail. Mahara was present in the special court today.

On Chaitra 26, 2082, a corruption case was filed against former Speaker and Nepal Communist Party (NCP) leader Mahara and Joint Secretary to the Government of Nepal Arun Pokharel as defendants on charges of smuggling gold by hiding it in electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes).

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had filed a case in a special court on charges of illegally transporting gold in the guise of e-cigarettes in collaboration with Chinese smugglers, making former Speaker Mahara, Joint Secretary Pokharel and Mahara's son Rahul as defendants and fixing a fine of around Rs 70 million.

The charge sheet filed by the CIAA in the Special Court alleges that former Speaker Mahara and others worked to pass gold smuggled by a Chinese gang in the wrapper of a cigarette.

What is the cigarette case?

The corruption case filed against Mahara and Joint Secretary Pokharel as defendants is related to the incident of 10 December 2079.

A new smuggling operation was revealed after the Chinese gang involved in smuggling smuggled gold from Dubai in the wrapper of an electronic cigarette (cigarette) on 10 December 2079. The smugglers had brought gold from Dubai to the customs warehouse via Tribhuvan Airport by hiding it in 733 cigarette cases. During the investigation, it was revealed that the gold was about 9 kg, but the matter became even more mysterious after it was stolen in the middle.

Li Hsang, a Chinese passport holder with EJ 6350030, had landed in Kathmandu from Dubai flight number FZ 0587 with 73 gold bars hidden in two suitcases. Hsang, who had brought the gold, was planning to have it checked as gold and hand it over to the gang leader, Dabajin Wang. Dabajin was a suspicious character linked to former Speaker Mahara. The airport customs office seized the goods on the same day after the goods were found suspicious at customs.

Hsang absconded a few days later. The owner of the gold, Dabajin Wang, had increased his activity to release the goods stopped at customs through former Speaker Mahara and his son Rahul. After that, Mahara's father and son became active in releasing the gold bars as per Dabajin Wang's plan. During that time, it was revealed that Mahara's father and son had made 256 phone calls to various people, including customs officials and Chinese smugglers, at different times.
