Ganesh Karki, who was arrested by police on Saturday evening, was the main person in a gang that used to do robberies by pouring chili powder in his eyes, the police said.

According to SSP Ramesh Thapa, Chief of the District Police Range, Kathmandu, after escaping from prison on 24 Bhadra after the Genji movement, he had again robbed a chain and mobile phone in the same style in Kathmandu-16, Sukedhara. He said that he was taken to the Manohara Khela Corridor in Jadibuti.

‘While taking control, the police had to open fire after the police personnel tried to hit him with a khukuri by pouring chili powder in his eyes,’ SSP Thapa said. ‘He is undergoing treatment at the trauma center.’

According to the police, he is also a former police officer.

He was a resident of Budhanilkantha Municipality-3, Chapali, after serving in the police service for three years and had fled without even resigning. After that, he was involved in a series of crimes, according to the police.

Initially, a case was registered against him for indecent behavior, and later, a case was filed for possession of weapons and ammunition and dereliction of duty, said SSP Thapa.

‘After serving his sentence in that case, he was again in the central prison for robbery, but he escaped during the Genji movement,’ he added, ‘Even after escaping from prison, he was active in his previous criminal activities.’

Thapa says that his involvement in 9 robberies in Kathmandu was revealed only after he escaped from prison. Further investigation is underway.
