Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal has emphasized the need to reform Nepal's foreign service in line with the times and focus on economic diplomacy.

Addressing a program organized on Sunday on the occasion of Foreign Service Day, Minister Khanal said that the ministry and foreign missions should be made result-oriented. 'Our strategic focus should now be focused on economic diplomacy. The time has come to abandon the traditional style and build active international partnerships for foreign direct investment, tourism promotion, technology transfer and market access,' he said,  'Foreign missions should now become centers of investment and technology, not just administrative offices. The appointment of missions will be considered not only as a right but as a performance-based responsibility.'

Minister Khanal said that the role played by former administrators and diplomats in protecting national sovereignty and interests despite limited resources and means was commendable.

Minister Khanal mentioned that foreign policy should be a reflection of internal priorities. He said that diplomatic acumen and strategic foresight are necessary to face the challenges posed by the rapid changes in global geopolitics, the climate crisis, and technological developments.

Minister Khanal emphasized that Nepal should not just react to the changes in the global environment, but should anticipate them and utilize them in the national interest. Pointing out the need for institutional reforms, Minister Khanal expressed his commitment to move the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to a data-based working system and fully implement the competency system.

Minister Khanal vowed to establish the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the first pillar of national security and prosperity, and said that service delivery would be made technology-friendly and hassle-free.
