Gunaraj Luintel has resigned as the editor-in-chief of Nagarik Dainik, published by Nepal Republic Media. Balkrishna Adhikari has been appointed as the editor after his resignation.

Luintel's resignation was accepted on Thursday, informed the network's chairman Romnath Ghimire. 'He is not leaving forever. He is probably writing a book, he has taken a break for that book,' he said, 'If he wants to join, he will work with us again.'

Luintel had been in editorial leadership since 12 Jestha 2072. 'I resigned according to my own plan. New leadership is needed everywhere in Nepal and my desire is for work to be done in a new way,' he said, 'I am wondering if I can do some creative work now instead of riding the cycle of daily news. No definite plan has been made for now.'

Founding chairman Binod Raj Gyawali was also present at the office to bid farewell to Luintel. According to a journalist from Nagarik, he had said that they would go in a new way. 'We have no problem. You don't have to think otherwise and there is nothing to fear,' Gyawali had said, 'We are now focusing on how to make the organization better by cutting expenses.'

Founding Chairman Gyawali told Kantipur that Luintel resigned of his own free will. 'He did not resign due to any crisis. This is also a regular process,' he said, 'I have told our friends accordingly.'

Earlier, Shobha Gyawali resigned from the position of Media Chairman on 29 Baisakh. After Shobha resigned, the board of directors appointed Romnath Ghimire as the chairman. Shobha became the chairman in mid-December. Before that, her husband Binod Raj was the chairman. Their daughter Samriddhi Gyawali resigned as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on 11 Falgun.

Chairman Ghimire said that family members left the board of directors because Republic Media is a company. "Founding Chairman Gyawali had made public the idea of going for a public run rather than a family run at the last annual general meeting, and we have moved forward accordingly," he said.

Republic Media had raised Rs 435.3 million from the public through an IPO in Jestha 2080.
