Nepal and Thailand have agreed to jointly expand cooperation in combating human trafficking, online fraud, smuggling and cybercrime after Thailand became a transit point for human trafficking, online scamming and cybercrime.
Nepali Ambassador to Thailand Dhan Bahadur Oli and Director of the Royal Thai Police's Special Task Force on Border-Related Cybercrime and Human Trafficking, Thachai Pitanilabhut, met in Bangkok on Friday and agreed to strengthen cooperation in combating human trafficking, online fraud, smuggling and cybercrime.
The embassy said that serious discussions were held during the meeting on the issue of human trafficking gangs abusing tourist visas and using Thailand as a transit point in recent years.
Police General Thachai had expressed his commitment to take immediate action upon receiving information about the trafficking from the Nepali Embassy.
Ambassador Oli thanked the Royal Thai Police for their assistance in rescuing and repatriating Nepalis who were trafficked in Thailand and neighboring countries.
Both sides stressed the need for closer cooperation to rescue people trapped in such centers, noting that the number of people being trafficked to online scam centers operating in neighboring countries is increasing.
During the meeting, an agreement was also reached to institutionalize intelligence and information exchange between the law enforcement agencies of Nepal and Thailand to control cybercrime, smuggling and transnational crimes.
In addition, discussions were held to expand cooperation on capacity building between the police agencies of both countries, according to the Nepali Embassy, Bangkok.
