The Federation of Nepal Trade Unions (GEFNT) has objected to the government's decision to integrate social security issues into the Ministry of Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities in the process of reducing the number of ministries.

GEFNT issued a press release on Thursday, stating that its attention has been drawn to the decision to reduce the number of ministries, change the name and make adjustments as per the Government of Nepal (Division of Work) Regulations, 2083 approved on Baisakh 30.

The statement states that the issue of removing the social security part from the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security and merging it with other ministries has been taken seriously. GEFNT has claimed that social security is a constitutional and fundamental right of workers.

'This is an achievement of the labor movement and is the right of workers who have agreed to balance the flexibility of the labor market,' the statement said.

GEFNT disagreed, saying that a unilateral decision was made without dialogue with stakeholders on sensitive issues related to social security, labor movement, life and future. The federation has urged the government to immediately withdraw the decision.

A statement issued by GEFONT General Secretary Laxman Sharma also warned that separating issues like social security from the labor sector would be a step that would weaken labor rights.
