Slum dwellers took out a rally on Wednesday evening to protest the decision to remove squatter settlements within Dharan Sub-metropolitan City.
Participants in the rally organized by the Slum Protection Movement Mobilization Committee demanded that the displaced families not be forced to move without compensation, rehabilitation and alternative arrangements. The rally, which started from the old hospital premises at Chhata Chowk in Dharan, reached Bhanuchowk via Mahendrapath and turned into a corner meeting. The program was attended by the All Nepal Slum Dwellers Association, the Slum Dwellers Protection Movement Committee, the Slum Dwellers Struggle Committee and locals.
During the demonstration, the participants chanted slogans like "Stop the dozer terror, Slum dwellers are one."
Sudarshan Shrestha, Koshi Province President of the All Nepal Slum Dwellers Association, said that the squatter community was forced to take up the protest due to the government's move. He stated that a nationwide protest was underway against the dozer campaign and warned that they would intensify the protest if the peaceful protest was suppressed.
