A lawsuit filed by a Nepali-American banker against one of the world's most powerful financial institutions is currently in the news in the United States. Chirayu Rana, a former senior vice president at JPMorgan Chase, America's largest bank, has accused a former female colleague of sexual harassment, racism and professional exploitation. He filed the lawsuit in a New York court last week.

The allegations, first reported by the British media Daily Mail, are extremely serious. The case is being sensationalized by podcasts and prime-time television hosts. The incident reminds many Nepalis who have lived or returned to the United States or abroad of their difficult experiences of migration. It is a reminder of the need to work while maintaining one's ethnic identity in a predominantly white business environment, the complexity of power relations in the workplace, and the close public scrutiny of South Asian businesspeople or professionals when something goes wrong. None of Rana's allegations have been confirmed yet. A court hearing has not yet begun.

Here are the key facts known so far.

Who is Chirayu Rana?

Rana's parents, who are 35 years old and work in the financial sector, immigrated to the United States. Rana, who grew up in Virginia, has worked with major American financial companies. He has experience working at Credit Suisse, The Carlyle Group, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan, among others. Before the controversy broke out, he was most recently working as a ‘principal’ at New York-based private equity firm Bregal Sagemount.

What happened at JP Morgan?

According to the American media outlet The Wall Street Journal

, Rana joined JP Morgan’s leveraged finance team in May 2024 as a senior vice president. In May 2025, he filed a complaint with the bank’s human resources department alleging racial discrimination and sexual misconduct against one of his senior colleagues. After this complaint, the bank launched an internal investigation and placed him on paid leave. According to the journal, the bank claimed that despite months of investigation, it did not find enough solid evidence to prove the serious allegations. Similarly, the bank alleges that Rana did not fully cooperate in this process. After being dissatisfied with the internal investigation, Rana left the bank and joined Bregal Sage Mount in October 2025. But he was fired from there in early April of this year. Shortly after losing his job, Rana's lawyers filed a lawsuit in New York state court. Initially filed using the pseudonym "John Doe," the lawsuit was first revealed by the New York Post

. The lawsuit accuses Lorna Hazini, a 37-year-old executive director of JPMorgan's leveraged finance division, of sexual misconduct, racial harassment, drug abuse and professional exploitation.

According to the documents, Hajini repeatedly demanded sex . She threatened to destroy Rana's career if he refused and Rana also accused him of racially abusing her throughout their time at the bank .

How did this story go viral? There are several reasons why this case went viral . First, the language used in it was visually interpreted, compared to the usual legal documents presented in court.  Second, it involved a male victim and a female accused, unlike the traditional pattern seen in most workplace harassment cases (male accused, female victim).  AI-generated videos based on the scenes described in the case have spread rapidly on social media platforms X and Instagram . Coverage by tabloids including the New York Post has made it a further sensation .

have also made public statements on the matter. What is JPMorgan's response? The bank has denied all of these allegations from the beginning. In its response to the Journal, JPMorgan said it had spoken to multiple employees and conducted an internal investigation and found no credibility in the claims. According to a JPMorgan spokesperson, Lorna Hajini has denied all of Rana's allegations with her lawyers. She has told her lawyers that she had no sexual or romantic relationship with Rana and that the story she made up was completely fabricated.

What's happening with the reconciliation lately?

According to new information released by the Journal, JPMorgan had tried to settle the matter peacefully before the matter went public. In March 2026, after weeks of mediation, the bank offered Rana $1 million.

That amount is less than his two-year salary at JPMorgan. Rana has neither officially accepted nor has there been any evidence that he rejected the offer. In April, Rana's lawyers filed a counterclaim against the company, seeking $11.75 million in damages. JPMorgan's rejection of the offer was followed by a public lawsuit. In a statement to the Journal, JPMorgan claimed that the company had sought a settlement to protect its employees from reputational damage. But it reiterated its claim that the grounds were not reasonable.

What is the current status of the case?

The case is still ongoing. JPMorgan has repeatedly maintained that the allegations are fabricated. Rana's legal team, however, maintains that the allegations are true. The case will now move through the New York court system, a process that could drag on for years.

Both JPMorgan and Lorna Hajini have denied all allegations in the case. Rana has not yet given any media interviews or issued any public statements.
