The writ petition filed in the Supreme Court against the government's decision to remove squatter settlements has been postponed to Wednesday. The case was postponed after the Kathmandu Metropolitan City requested time to file a petition before the bench of Justices Sharanga Subedi and Shantisingh Thapa on Wednesday, saying that it was not prepared enough.
Earlier, the case was postponed to today, saying that it had been ordered to be filed on Tuesday. Advocate Jasmine Ojha, one of the petitioners, said that the Supreme Court had scheduled the next hearing for Thursday and asked all parties to prepare and come to the hearing. The metropolis requested time in the bench, saying that it had not received information and was not prepared enough, and was given one day's time.
Three writ petitions related to squatter settlements were filed in the Supreme Court for hearing. Gopal Ran Paheli, senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi and Majid Ansari had also filed separate writs. The Supreme Court had set a date for hearing all those writ petitions together.
Even though the government had started issuing notices to use dozers in areas including Thapathali, they had reached the Supreme Court. Paheli had filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court on April 11. Even after the settlement was evacuated and placed in a holding center, the Supreme Court has not yet heard the case. Earlier, the Supreme Court had ordered the submission of five details related to the method and process adopted by the government in demolishing the squatter settlements. A single bench of Justice Sunil Kumar Pokharel made this order on Monday in a writ petition filed by Majid Ansari and others.
