The Nepal Mountaineering Association brought the body of an unidentified climber found on the Everest climbing route to Kathmandu on Saturday. The identity of the body has not been revealed yet.
After initial identification efforts at the base camp failed, the concerned agencies are studying the records of climbers who lost their lives during past climbs. The body was found by icefall doctors between the base camp and Camp-1 under the Khumbu Icefall area during routine route management. According to the association's president, Furgelje Sherpa, the body was found partially buried under the ice on the main climbing route, which posed a safety and environmental risk.
Following the directives of the Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, the association had conducted a rescue operation in coordination with the Everest Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) and other bodies. In the process, the body was removed from the ice on Wednesday and brought to the Everest Base Camp.
Although the attempt to bring the body to Lukla by helicopter on Thursday failed due to bad weather, the body was successfully brought to Lukla in a second attempt on Friday.
After the postmortem was conducted by the local police in Lukla, the body was brought to Kathmandu on Saturday morning and submitted to the Teaching Hospital for further examination. The association has stated that the identity of the body will be confirmed through DNA testing.
