A dozer has also been used on the 7-storey Pathibhara Devi Temple in Balkhu. The temple inside the settlement was also demolished during the process of removing the squatter settlements.
According to local Bijula Bika, the demolition was carried out under the leadership of the police even though the Metropolitan Police had asked not to demolish it.
Earlier, the Sange Choiling Monastery in Balkhu was also demolished. The monastery's chairman, Kapure Tamang, said that the dozer was used despite requests not to demolish it on the day of Buddha Jayanti.
The government used a dozer in the Bansighat area near Balkhu and Teku on Friday morning as part of its 'removal of unorganized settlements' along the river banks of Kathmandu.
On Wednesday, the Kathmandu District Administration Office had issued a notice asking people to evacuate the settlement. After the notice, many people had started vacating their homes and huts on their own.
As before, the demolition of the settlements has begun using dozers amidst a tight security cordon. Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Municipal Police and others have been deployed at the scene.
