The government has recommended an ordinance to give the Money Laundering Investigation Department the authority to investigate crimes related to financial crimes.

The Council of Ministers has recommended to the President to issue Ordinance 2083 to amend and consolidate the Money Laundering Prevention Act 2064. According to sources in the Prime Minister's Office, the ordinance has been recommended to give the department the authority to investigate crimes related to customs and revenue fraud, insurance securities, foreign exchange and other crimes. The country is on the 'grey list', but a lot of work needs to be done to get out of it, and the ordinance has been recommended to expand the capacity and authority of the department with that in mind. With this, now in addition to the Authority, the police and other investigative bodies, the Money Laundering Investigation Department will also pave the way for initial investigations into the mentioned crimes by considering them as predicate crimes.

Chaitra 2080 The then government amended the act and took away the authority of the department to investigate related crimes from the parliament and delegated it to other investigative bodies. This meant that if a complaint was received by the department after the delegation, it would be forced to send it to another body instead of investigating it.

If the President issues an ordinance, the department will now be the main culprit and investigate the case.
