Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that Nepal should take diplomatic initiatives with a clear and common national vision to resolve the existing problems with neighboring countries.
Addressing a program organized in Kathmandu on Friday, he said this. He drew the government's attention to trade and border-related issues with India and China. He pointed out the need for the entire country to stand together and communicate with neighboring countries on issues of foreign relations and foreign policy. President Thapa expressed concern that Nepal's tea industry is in danger of collapse due to the recent tax imposed by the Indian government on Nepali tea. He urged the government to facilitate Nepali products by holding effective diplomatic dialogue with the Indian government on this issue.
Speaking about trade relations with China, Thapa expressed concern about the obstacles being faced at the northern border crossings. He said that only 4-7 vehicles are allowed to pass through the border crossings daily, which should have a daily traffic of 50 goods vehicles, which has had a negative impact on Nepali traders and the economy. He said that the government should take immediate steps to remove obstacles at the border crossings and create a smooth business environment. Targeting the ongoing discussions and consensus regarding the opening of a road to Mansarovar via Lipulekh by India and China, President Thapa said that Nepal's presence and stance on such issues should be clear.
He said, "Nepal's tea was gradually establishing itself as a big industry, but due to the taxes imposed by India, this sector is in danger of collapsing. While dialogue is ongoing between India and China on the Lipulekh issue, the entire Nepal should stand together and talk. The main priority now should be to have a firm dialogue with both neighbors to get the concessions and facilities we deserve."
President Thapa clarified that his party would support the government in lawmaking and governance since it has a majority, but the government should be serious about issues of national interest. He suggested the government to rise above the game of power in foreign policy and relations with neighbors and move forward on the basis of national interest.
