US President Donald Trump's special envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gore, is arriving in Kathmandu this evening.
Currently serving as the US ambassador to India, he is known as a close friend of Trump. He has also been given the responsibility of the ambassador to India as well as the special envoy for South and Central Asia.
Gore has requested a time of Friday or Saturday to meet Prime Minister Balendra Shah, but the meeting has not been confirmed. Gore is the highest-ranking diplomat to visit Nepal since the formation of the Shah-led government.
According to sources in the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Shah has not decided to meet Gore as of Wednesday evening despite suggestions from various levels.
However, Gore will meet Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai and other officials.
According to Deepa Dahal, the Prime Minister's press and research expert, a meeting with the Foreign Minister and Foreign Secretary has been scheduled. Although Gore has repeatedly requested to meet the Prime Minister, the meeting has not been confirmed as the Prime Minister is busy with internal affairs. Shah is said to be focusing mainly on governance issues.
Prime Minister Shah is trying to establish a standard for meeting only with foreign ministers or higher-level officials. Earlier, he had jointly met with ambassadors of various countries on April 8.
Gore is expected to convey a message of possible support to the new government and say that the US is ready to bring investment to Nepal if legal reforms are implemented.
The US side has also indicated that his visit will focus on trade and investment, as he has strong business and investment ties in Washington.
