The Japanese government is to honor former Foreign Secretary Madan Kumar Bhattarai with the 'Order of the Rising Sun' award. According to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he is being given this decoration for his significant role in strengthening Nepal-Japan relations. 

Bhattarai, who is also Nepal's former ambassador to Japan, has played a role in strengthening the relations and friendship between the two countries, according to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During his nearly 40-year diplomatic career, Bhattarai also served as ambassador to Germany.

He has also played an important role in various Nepali missions. He was Foreign Secretary from 2009 to 2011. Later, he also became an advisor to the then President Bidya Devi Bhandari. Bhattarai entered the government service in 1977. Before that, he was also active in teaching and journalism. He also became an assistant editor at Rising Nepal. He has done his PhD in Nepal-India relations from Jadavpur University in Kolkata. 

The Japanese government has been awarding the ‘Order of the Rising Sun’ to foreign nationals who have played a significant role in improving relations with Japan twice a year, in spring and autumn. The Japanese government announces the ‘Spring Imperial Decoration’ on April 29 and the ‘Autumn Imperial Decoration’ on November 3. This award was established in 1875 by the then Japanese Emperor Meiji. Among these decorations, the ‘Order of the Rising Sun’ is given on the basis of merit.

Earlier, the Japanese government had also awarded the same decoration to the then Congress leader Ramchandra Poudel and the founding governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank, Himalaya Shumsher Jabra. 

Japan has been honoring people who have contributed to strengthening bilateral relations in the fields of diplomacy, research and education, medicine and social welfare, sports, culture, and other fields.

This time, the Japanese government is also honoring Ramasundari Joshi, a former employee of the Japanese Embassy in Kathmandu, with the 'Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Rage' award. According to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she is being honored for her contribution to Japanese activities abroad.
