The road connecting the northern border post of Karnali Province to Mugu has been constructed only 18 kilometers in 10 years. The survey of this road began in 2062/063, but the construction work began only in 2072/073. Only 18 and a half kilometers of the road have been constructed in the last 10 years.

Due to geographical difficulties, the construction work has not been able to progress rapidly. The road from Gamgadhi to Nakche is 93 kilometers long. The Road Division Office, Jumla, has stated that 6 kilometers of the road will be constructed by the end of this fiscal year. The work has been delayed even though the government has not prioritized this road.

The people of Karnali are saddened that this road, which is connected to the life of Karnali Province, has been neglected by the federal government. In the last fiscal year 2078/79, 49.3 million rupees were spent on road construction. In 2079/80, 44 million rupees were spent. The construction of 18.5 kilometers of road from Gamgadhi to Chail Sulsule Bhir near Mugu Karmarong Rural Municipality-9 has been completed.

Blasting has now begun to break through 220 meters of hard rock. Blasting has begun in coordination with the Nepal Army as it is difficult to dig through the hard rocky Mangri Bhir. Road digging is being done despite the geographical conditions, risky cliffs and limited resources. The Road Division Office, Jumla, has stated that the project is expected to gain momentum with the start of blasting to break through the rock.

The federal government has now ensured a source of Rs 150 million, said Shravan Kumar Mahatara, Chief Engineer of Road Division, Jumla. He said, ‘So far, 18.5 kilometers of road have been opened. Blasting has begun to break through 220 meters of hard rock in the current fiscal year. Now the road construction work is expected to gain momentum.'

He said that the goal is to open 24.5 kilometers of road tracks and also gravel them. 'Due to limited resources and difficult geography, the construction work has been progressing at a slow pace,' said Office Chief Mahatara, 'Now we are planning to build as fast as possible.'

Jagriti-Rara Tenzin-Noryang JV has been awarded the contract to construct the Gamgadhi-Nakchelagna road by blasting rocks and graveling. The blasting work has been progressing amidst the risks to technical manpower, construction entrepreneurs and workers.

If the Gamgadhi-Nakchelagna road is constructed, the business activities of the northern neighboring country, China and Karnali Province will be facilitated. It is believed that this will contribute to the economic development of Karnali. Outgoing Minister for Physical Infrastructure Madhav Chaulagain said that the road has slowed down due to the distribution of low state resources. He said, ‘Infrastructure construction is actually a movement to change the situation. If Karnali gets fair investment in terms of budget as well as geography, the hills of Karnali will not remain inaccessible.’

Raj Bahadur Mahat, President of Civil Society Jumla, said that the road connecting Nakchelagna via Gamgadhi should be a priority for the development of Karnali. He said, ‘The overall development of Karnali is possible only through this route. It seems that the central government and the provincial government should work diligently for this.’
