The Federation of Nepal Trade Unions (GEFNT) has said that any step to curtail trade union rights will not be tolerated. 

In a press conference organized on Tuesday on the occasion of World Workers' Day-2026, GEFNT expressed concern over the government's attempts to curtail trade union rights and structures, expressing its objection to the efforts to curtail trade union rights and structures provided for in the constitution and law.  

Shrestha said 'The government is trying to curtail trade union rights and structures provided for in the constitution and law,' said GEFNT President Binod Shrestha. 'As international conventions and labor laws ensure the right to collective bargaining, any step to curtail trade union rights will not be tolerated.' Shrestha noted that Article 34 of the Constitution of Nepal lists labor rights as a fundamental right and has been organized through necessary laws. 

GEFNT Pointing out that a new and dynamic movement is needed to protect trade union rights, he said, 'We are preparing to take forward various programs.' He  He also accused the newly elected government of being populist and right-wing opportunist. 

On the occasion, Chairman Shrestha issued the 'May Day-2026 Manifesto'. The manifesto mentions making various arrangements to attract the youth to the trade union movement. GEFONT has stated that it will not only focus on salary increases but will struggle for prosperity through digital transformation. 

Similarly, Chairman Binod Shrestha said that it has adopted a policy of developing youth leadership in the 40-year-old age group and ensuring women's participation at every level. He informed that World Workers' Day programs will be organized in Nepal and abroad on Baisakh 18 with the slogan 'Right to work, respect for labor, enhancement of skills; Progress with technology, prosperity with workers!'.
