According to Kathmandu's Chief District Officer Ishwar Raj Poudel, the names of those who want government assistance but not houses have been collected at Dasharath Stadium. He said that those in trouble have been accommodated in various hotels, lodges and the building of Radhaswamy Satsang Nepal in Kirtipur.

'Within the next 15 days, a rigorous screening of all their details, from whether they have any houses or not, will be conducted,' he told Kantipur. 'After that, if it is found in all the checks that even one member of the family does not have any land, then management will be done.'

Although there have been clashes in the past during the evacuation of squatter settlements, there were no untoward incidents this time. However, the victims were terrified due to the large security presence. The government had started a campaign to evacuate the squatter settlements in Thapathali on Saturday morning amid heavy security presence. The police had tightened security arrangements keeping in mind the past background. Nepal Police spokesperson DIG Abinarayan Kafle says that security personnel have supported the government's campaign. 'The work was also supported from the civil level, there were no untoward activities,' he said, 'the work was done very smoothly and peacefully.'

According to the report prepared by the empowered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee in 2079, there are 3,496 households living in unorganized settlements on the banks of the river in the valley. Of these, 2,245 are in Kathmandu Metropolitan City, 90 in Kageshwari Municipality, 156 in Budhanilkantha, 17 in Lalitpur Metropolitan City, and 773 in Bhaktapur Municipality.

According to Machakaji Maharjan, project chief of the Empowered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee, arrangements have been made to accommodate those selected through screening in an apartment in Ichangu, Nagarjuna Municipality. ‘That structure can currently accommodate 45 people,’ he said, ‘There are also some structures that the ashram has been using, and that can also be managed if they want to stay.’

Stating that there is always fear during floods as the settlements are located around the river banks of the valley, he says, ‘There have always been attempts to remove them during the monsoon, but it has not been possible.’

Kathmandu Chief District Officer Poudel says that the work of evacuating the squatters is still ongoing. Prime Minister Balendra Shah had tried to remove the squatter settlements when he was the mayor of Kathmandu. But the federal government did not support him. Kathmandu Chief District Officer Poudel says that the work of evacuating the squatter settlements is still ongoing. "The work of evacuating the settlements is also accompanied by their rehabilitation," he said.

Prime Minister Shah had summoned the security chiefs on Wednesday evening and directed them to start preparations to evacuate the squatters. After that, the Ministry of Urban Development had also started preparations. Human rights organizations, civic leaders, the Sukumwasi Morcha, among others, had urged the government not to use force without alternative management.

In the past, even the court had ordered the evacuation of squatters only after first verifying them. This time too, a writ petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the government's decision to evacuate the squatters. The court has summoned the government on Monday to discuss the matter.
