Armed Police Force (APF) Inspector General Raju Aryal is retiring on 18 Baisakh after completing his 4-year term. After Aryal, who became the Inspector General in Baisakh 2079, is retiring, the government is busy selecting the future leadership of the Armed Police Force.

So far, 13 Inspectors General have been appointed in the Armed Police Force. Now the government is going to decide who will be the 13th Inspector General. The leadership may be finalized in today's cabinet meeting. If the appointment is not made today, the next cabinet meeting is scheduled for Thursday only.

The government is under pressure to finalize the decision a few days in advance as the Inspector General will retire on Friday. Sources in the Prime Minister's Office say that the Cabinet meeting is likely to decide on the Inspector General of the Armed Police Force. Additional Inspector General (AIG) duo Narayan Dutt Poudel and Banshiraj Dahal are in the running for the future leadership.

Both the competitors are officers who entered the service as police inspectors in 2054 Baisakh. With the formation of the Armed Police Force in 2057, they transferred from the police to the armed forces. After that, they became AIGs through decisions on different dates. Poudel was promoted from DIB to AIG on 6 Jestha 2079, while Dahal was promoted to AIG on 28 Asoj of the same year. In this way, Poudel is about 5 months senior to Dahal and he is also accused of suppressing the Gen-G movement on 23 and 24 Bhadra.

The former Justice Gauri Bahadur Karki Commission to investigate the Gen-G movement had recommended departmental action against Poudel on charges of suppressing the Gen-G movement. In this way, if departmental action is recommended against Poudel, then the claimant, another AIG Dahal, was promoted to AIG 5 months after Poudel. In this background, both are lobbying to reach the leadership. The one who takes over the AIG leadership among the two will remain in office till Chait 2084 if the current 30-year service period is maintained.

A three-member inquiry committee comprising former AIG of Police Tek Prasad Rai and former AIG of Armed Police Subodh Adhikari has been formed on 2 Baisakh under the coordination of former High Court judge Prem Raj Karki to further investigate the implementation of the Karki Commission report in the security agencies. In this backdrop, there is increased interest in who the government will bring to the leadership position that will be vacant in the armed forces in a few days.

AIG Poudel, who is in the competition, is lobbying to take over the leadership position as he is 5 months senior. Another AIG Dahal, on the other hand, is in favor of taking over the leadership, saying that since the current government is built on the foundation of the Gen-G movement, those recommended by the inquiry commission should not be promoted.

In the same month, Prime Minister Balendra Shah has called a cabinet meeting for 2 pm on Monday. The Armed Police Act 2058 BS provides for promotion to IGP from among AIGs with seniority, efficiency, and leadership ability, and from DIGs in the absence of AIGs.
