A half-length statue of Nepali Princess Bhrikuti, a bridge of Nepal-China friendship, has been unveiled at the Nepali Consulate General in Lhasa. Bhrikuti, who married the Tibetan King Srongchung Gampo in the 7th century and established cordial relations between the two countries, spread Buddhism in China. The statue was unveiled on Monday in the presence of the Nepali community and concerned persons at the Consulate General.
The statue was carved and brought to Lhasa, Xichang, courtesy of the JV Foundation of Nepal. Before bringing the statue to Lhasa, the statue was handed over to Amrit Bahadur Rai, Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nepal.
Consul General Laxmi Prasad Niraula said that the statue was installed to commemorate this unparalleled contribution since Bhrikuti was the initiator of Nepal-China friendship. He told Kantipur, “The idea of installing the statue was brought to remember the legacy of friendship created by sons like Bhrikuti and Araniko in history. We also want to unveil the statue of Araniko in the future.’
During the unveiling of the statue, Foundation Chairman Jagadish Baidya expressed his happiness at being able to hand over the statue for the purpose of keeping the history of Nepal-China relations alive. He expressed his hope that in the future, he would be even more excited to donate such treasures that reflect mutual relations and would cooperate.
A team including Kunjo Dharke Nepali, Chairman of the Nepali Grief Relief Welfare Fund, had assisted in various tasks, from building a basement for the unveiling of the statue at the Consulate General to bringing the statue to Lhasa. Dharke said that he was proud to provide such assistance.
The Nepali community in Lhasa was present at the unveiling program, and the Consulate General honored the Foundation and the Fund officials with a letter of appreciation for their assistance in installing the statue.
Scholars from both countries have described Bhrikuti, who contributed to improving international relations by marrying a Tibetan king in the seventh century, as a bridge between Nepal and China. Bhrikuti, who played an important role in the establishment and propagation of Chinese Buddhism, is worshipped as the Green Star.
