The administration is preparing to keep the squatters who have no other choice, who were picked up from Thapathali, Gairigaun, Manohara and other areas of Kathmandu, at the Dasharath Stadium for data collection.
According to Kathmandu Chief District Officer Ishwar Raj Poudel, preparations are underway to keep the stadium as a holding center in the first phase and collect data.
‘The Ministry of Urban Development and its team are ready for that, after collecting the data, a decision will be made on where to send the families who really need help for temporary housing,’ he told Kantipur. ‘Five or seven places have been prepared to keep them, and the ministry has managed them.’
However, he said that background checks will be conducted before sending them there. ‘All this work will be done today, not keeping them in the stadium,’ he added.
Pradya Poudel said that work is being done to evacuate the squatter settlements by paying attention to the humanitarian aspect. ‘The Metropolitan Police, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have also been deployed, they are miking to evacuate,’ Poudel added, ‘Mini trucks and pickup trucks have been arranged to transport their belongings, priority has been given to moving the belongings.’ He informed that nine government buses have also been mobilized to transport the citizens of the squatter settlements. ‘Management has been made to deliver the belongings according to where they say they want to be taken,’ Poudel added, ‘Ambulances and medical teams have also been prepared for the sick.’
Prime Minister Balendra Shah had summoned the security chiefs on Wednesday evening and directed them to start preparations to evacuate the squatter settlements. After that, the Ministry of Urban Development had also started preparations. Human rights organizations, civic leaders, the Slum Squatter Front, among others, had urged the government not to use force without finding an alternative arrangement.
