It has been revealed that Home Minister Sudhan Gurung left the meeting of the National Disaster Management Authority and submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Balendra Shah.

A meeting was called at the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority on Wednesday afternoon with Home Minister Gurung. Gurung was present at the meeting to discuss the work done by various agencies for monsoon disaster response, along with Gurung, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Sunil Lamsal, an army general, and the Director General of the Roads and Irrigation Department.

While listening to the briefing of all the agencies in the meeting, Minister Gurung also made some brief remarks. However, before giving a separate instruction at the end, he got up and left, according to a source in the Home Minister's secretariat. 'He left in the middle and went to meet the Prime Minister,' said a member of the secretariat, 'he resigned at that time, there was no talk of resigning before that.'

The executive head of the authority Dinesh Bhatta said that Gurung made suggestions while the representatives were speaking in the meeting. ‘It was actually a coordination meeting,’ he told Kantipur. ‘He had made suggestions such as installing GPS in the vehicles.’

Gurung had announced his resignation on social media about an hour after leaving the meeting. He wrote on Facebook, ‘I have resigned from the post of Home Minister with effect from today with the aim of ensuring that there is a fair investigation into matters related to me and that there is no conflict of interest while holding the post and that it is not affected in any way.’

Gurung was embroiled in controversy after details of his business partnership with businessman Deepak Bhatta, who is under investigation by the Money Laundering Investigation Department, were made public.

However, Gurung’s secretariat had previously said that the Home Minister was opposed to stopping the Home Minister’s steps against corruption. "For me, morality is greater than position, and there is no greater power than public trust," Gurung said. "The Gen-G movement that is rising in the country today demanding good governance, transparency, and accountability has also given the same message: public life must be clean, and leadership must be responsible."
