Former Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and then acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka have sought assurance that the 15th General Convention will be held in a fair and independent manner.

After the Supreme Court's verdict, leaders of the disgruntled party leaders who met at Khadka's residence on Saturday discussed various options to ensure that the General Convention will be held in a fair manner.

Leader Prakash Sharan Mahat said that if a concrete proposal is made on how to make the 15th General Convention free, impartial and in a way that everyone can take ownership, unity can be maintained. 'I have put forward the option of holding the General Convention by forming a separate mechanism for those who are not contesting the election to move the General Convention forward in a way that is fair and respectful and participatory for everyone,' Mahat said. 'It has been said that friends should not say that this should be the case unless something comes from the other side (the establishment party). However, everyone's mindset is that the party should be unified and carried out.'

Some leaders including former office bearers Bimalendra Nidhi, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Prakash Man Singh have said that they cannot accept the Central Working Committee that came from the special general convention. Nidhi had said that he would not accept the Central Working Committee that he had declared himself at the special general convention.

Sitaula and Singh also had the same opinion. A former office bearer who participated in the leaders' discussion said that if there is no initiative for respectful unity, they should even form a separate party. 'Even if such ideas come up while discussing various options, we are not in favor of forming a separate party. We are in favor of not causing further damage by dividing the Congress while the communists are taking initiatives for unity,' the office bearer said. 'But if the establishment party moves forward in favor of not accepting anyone's existence on the basis that we have won, then there is a situation where we can also go for that option.'

After the court's verdict, a meeting has been called again at 12 noon on Sunday to take suggestions from former office bearers and central members who are in their favor. Mahat said that a meeting of leaders supporting the 14th General Convention has been called to form a common opinion on how to move forward after listening to everyone's views.
