The fire that has been burning in the community forests of Wards 5, 6 and 7 of Kalimati Rural Municipality in Salyan for a week has not been brought under control. The lack of fire extinguishing equipment at the local level and the strong winds have made the locals afraid to go near it, increasing the fear of the fire reaching the settlements.

The fire has broken out in the community forests of Ghusabari, Hariyali, Deurali, Triveni, Simle in Ward No. 5 of the rural municipality, Bayaldadi, Shanti in Ward No. 6, and Amliseni, Mahalaxmi, Hariyali in Ward No. 7.

The extent of damage caused by the fire has not been revealed yet. Chandra Bahadur Gahamagar, Chairman of Triveni Community Forest in Kalimati Rural Municipality-5, said that the fire could not be controlled as the flames spread far and wide due to the strong winds.

Bayaldadi Community Forest Chairman Mangal Singh Mahatara said that the fire was in a remote area of the community forest and that it could not be extinguished. He said that in previous years, when fires broke out in the forest, they had been extinguishing it with firewood.

Kalimati Rural Municipality 7 Ward Chairman Mitralal Rijal said that fires have been breaking out in community forests in various places since a week ago. He informed that the environment has been polluted due to the fire. According to him, there are 9 community forests in ward number 7. All of them are on fire. It is not clear how many hectares have been damaged by the fire.

Forest Federation Salyan Chairman Purushottam Bhatrai said that locals have informed that fires have broken out in 16 community forests in Kalimati for the past few days. He also claimed that most of the places have been brought under control. There are 63 community forests in all wards of Kalimati.

Santa Thapa, Chief of the Sub-Division Office, Kalimati, said that the fires currently raging in 3 community forests in 3 wards have not been brought under control by local users due to their geographical remoteness. He informed that although fires broke out in various places in the community forests a few days ago, all of them have been brought under control. He said that there was no damage other than small plants due to the fires.
