The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation has directed to improve passenger services at all airports across the country within 24 hours.
As per the directive of Tourism Minister Khadak Raj Poudel, the ministry has sent a letter to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal to immediately improve services at all airports, including Tribhuvan International Airport, based on passenger complaints and suggestions.
The directive issued by Secretary of the Ministry, Mukunda Niraula, has made airport management more responsible and prioritized passenger services. Passengers at domestic airports must pay a passenger service fee of Rs. 500 for each ticket.
As per the directive of the ministry, it is mandatory to have a breastfeeding and baby care room at every airport. Airports have no option not to operate breastfeeding and baby-changing rooms that are clean, safe and ensure privacy. Similarly, first aid rooms must be made mandatory for senior citizens, sick and differently abled passengers.
It is expected to provide immediate assistance to passengers with emergency health problems. Keeping in mind the convenience of female passengers, instructions have also been given to provide free sanitary pads in major toilets. Earlier, no airport in Nepal had free sanitary pad service.
Special strictness has been imposed on the cleanliness of the toilets of the airport, which is highly criticized. Now, effective daily cleaning arrangements must be implemented, and the standards of the World Health Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization must be followed. In addition, regular monitoring and inspection by the airport chief has also been given priority.
The ministry has instructed to implement all these arrangements within 24 hours and submit a progress report with photos. It has also warned that legal action will be taken if the instructions are disobeyed. Passengers have also been urged to send complaints or suggestions to the concerned body.
The authority spends at least Rs 400 million on cleaning through third-party contractors every year.
