A rhino has died after being shot in self-defense by a military patrol in the Chitwan National Park. The injured soldiers were rescued by helicopter and are being treated at Birendra Hospital in Kathmandu, the park office said. The incident took place around 1 pm on Thursday.
The military patrol from the Seri security post of the Naya Gorakh battalion of the army deployed in the park encountered a rhino with a half-grown child when it was attacked by a rhino, said Avinash Thapa Magar, the park's information officer and conservation officer. He said that after the rhino attacked a soldier in the patrol, he initially tried to drive him away by firing 10 rounds in the air. When he did not run away, another soldier fired 4 more rounds in the air.
After that, the rhino continued to attack, he fired 2 rounds, according to information officer Thapa Magar. He claimed that the step was taken in a forced situation to save the life of the injured soldier. One of the bullets hit the rib above the abdomen. Thapa Magar informed that the postmortem revealed that the bullet had punctured the lung. The park has not revealed the name or identity of the injured soldier. He is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the camp hospital.
