House of Representatives member Krantishikha Dhital has urged the government to take mental health issues seriously.

Speaking during the zero hour of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, she said that the recent political changes were the achievement of the youth movement and its effects are still being seen in society.

She said that the families of martyrs, injured, security personnel and employees participating in the movement may be mentally affected and said that this issue should not be ignored. She said, ‘Anyone of us can be affected by mental health issues, a person’s position or status does not determine the suffering.’

Dhital mentioned that there is still a tendency in society to either not consider mental health as a problem or to hide it. She said that people suffering from mental problems do not get adequate support even from their families.

Stating that the problem is becoming more complex due to the lack of a clear policy and lack of public awareness, she pointed out the need for the state to formulate a concrete policy on the role and utility of psychosocial counselors. Dhital, through the Speaker, urged the government to prioritize the mental health sector.
