The couple of Basanta Rai, 32, and Sajina Rai, 30, of Lafyang, Diktel Rupakot, Majhuwagadhi Municipality-5, did not think that they would have to separate so soon.
Basanta and Sajina had converted the relationship they had been living in while they were in Malaysia for foreign employment into marriage 3 years ago. Basanta, who left his 13-month-old son John, his wife and family and reached Kuwait on Ashad 28, died of a heart attack on Falgun 15 (February 27) at 5 am.
Basanta had talked to Sajina at home until late on Falgun 14. ‘We used to talk to our child (son) through video calls 4-5 times a day. On the night of the 14th, the child fell asleep. The next day after we talked and parted ways, the bad news came in the afternoon,’ Sajina said, ‘It was like falling off a cliff, now how will we raise and educate this child? How painful it is.’
Along with the loss of her husband, Sajina is also worried about the debt. She said that the loan taken to go to Kuwait and the previous loan have also made her hungry and thirsty. Sajina said that she paid 235,000 rupees to the manpower only when she went to Kuwait. ‘There is a loan from going to Kuwait and before that, I sent it little by little during this 8-month period, there is still 145,000 rupees left,’ Sajina said, ‘The one who died is already dead, it is difficult for the survivors.’
Basanta, who works as a plumber at the China State Construction Engineering Corporation Company in Kuwait, was not aware of any disease before. His father, Tek Bahadur Rai, 69, said that he was shocked when he heard the news of his son’s sudden death due to a heart attack. ‘There was no one mind in ten minds, I did not know that such news would come, I did not know that I had any disease until now,’ Tek Bahadur said, ‘I had to suffer the unexpected, a big thunderbolt .’
Basant, who died of a heart attack at around 5 am on Falgun 15 due to the ongoing war in West Asia, reached his home on Thursday after 34 days. The cremation was performed on the same day according to Kirati culture. Basant is Saila among 5 sons and 3 daughters. After living in Malaysia for 7 years and returning home 3 years ago, Basant got married and left his wife and son in a tent at Buddha Chowk in Dharan and went to Kuwait.
