Victims who have not received their savings deposited in five different cooperatives in the country, run by Gitendra Babu Rai (GB Rai), met Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Pratibha Rawal in Kathmandu on Thursday.

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSWP) central president and MP Ravi Lamichhane is also involved in this cooperative fraud case. A case has also been filed against him in court.

Victims of the Sahara Chitwan Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society in Chitwan, Supreme in Butwal, Sano Paila in Birgunj, Surya Darshan in Pokhara and Swarna Lakshmi with an office in Kathmandu have met the minister and submitted a 10-point demand. Their main demand is that the cases pending in the court should be decided as soon as possible in the interest of the savers.

The victims have demanded that a 35-day notice be issued to the debtors to collect the loans scattered in the local market, that the path of the case be opened as some of the defendants who came in contact while the case was going on in court are ready to pay the money that is said to have been misappropriated. They have demanded that GB Rai, who is considered the main mastermind of this case but has been absconding for a long time, be arrested immediately.

The defendants should confiscate the properties of the cooperative fraudsters including Rai and return the victim's money, and that the provincial office should take an interest in this and declare the cooperative as distressed immediately, said Shalikram Duwadi, coordinator of the Sangharsh Samiti formed by the Sahara Chitwan Bachatkarta.

They have demanded that the properties of relatives up to seven generations be investigated to find the money hidden by the fraudsters of the cooperative. Duwadi also said that if the government does not do anything immediately, the victims should be refunded the money from the state treasury and later the amount should be recovered from the cooperative fraudsters. He said that the victims have been struggling for four years to get their savings back.

‘Right now, the government is about two-thirds close. If our demands are not met even at this time, when will they be met,’ he said. After listening to their demands, Cooperatives Minister Pratibha Rawal said that she was committed to solving this problem. ‘The minister has said that he will work to solve the problems of the cooperatives. He has said that he will complete the work even if there are challenges,’ Duwadi said.
