The issue of increasing the age limit for old age allowance provided by the government under social security is currently in the news.

After the ‘Good Governance Roadmap Committee’ formed by the government recommended increasing the minimum age for receiving old age allowance to 75 years, the interest of stakeholders on social media has increased.

Currently, old age allowance is being given to single women and senior citizens of the Karnali region at the age of 65 and to others at the age of 70. The report prepared by the committee has suggested increasing the age limit with the aim of making the social security system sustainable in the long term. However, government agencies have said that there has been no discussion on this issue.

Finance Ministry spokesperson Tanka Prasad Pandaya said that the committee’s recommendation has not been taken to the level of discussion. He said, ‘Suggestions are coming one by one and there has been no discussion on this. There will be a gradual discussion, and there is also time to prepare the budget.’

Assistant Spokesperson of the National Planning Commission, Diwakar Luintel, said that the recommendation came informally. He clarified that no formal information had been received. He said, ‘It has come informally. Nothing has been formally received by the commission.’

Old age allowance starting from Rs 100 up to Rs 4,000

The government implemented the ‘Old age allowance for senior citizens’ program through the budget of the fiscal year 2052/53. At that time, it was announced that senior citizens would be provided with an allowance of Rs 100 per month. After that, the old age allowance, which has been gradually increasing, has now reached Rs 4,000 per month.
