Unable to bear the daily beatings, she reached the Area Police Office on Chaitra 13 to seek justice. Manpura Adhikari (old woman) of Narharinath-3, 27, requested justice saying that she could not live with her husband. The police made a 'reconciliation' between the husband and wife. However, Manpura lost her life less than three days after the 'reconciliation'.

Manpura returned home with her husband after signing a document at the post on the evening of Chaitra 13 in the presence of local dignitaries and the ward chairman on the condition that she would not be beaten again and that she would live together. She was murdered on the night of the 15th. Police have stated that her husband, 29, Kashiram Budha, killed her by hitting her head with an axe after a fight between the husband and wife.

After her husband, who had been drinking, died from the attack, her body was taken to the district hospital for post-mortem on Monday evening. The post-mortem report states that she had suffered serious injuries to her head, forehead, face and other areas. The police have arrested Manpura's husband Kashiram on charges of involvement in the murder and are investigating the case of manslaughter.

Manpura, who hails from Sannitriveni-1, Lusa Maiti Ghar, did not expect her husband to become 'Kaal'. According to relatives, they had been fighting for a long time. No one intervened, considering the fight between husband and wife to be normal. 'He is a person with a criminal mentality who takes his own life,' said Double Adhikari, a relative of the deceased. 'He should have divorced his wife without understanding her feelings, but he killed her anyway.'

According to the police, Kashiram locked his three minor children in another room on the night of Chaitra 15 on the pretext that a stranger had called his wife. After that, it was revealed that he beat his wife and hit her head with an axe, said Police Inspector Barma Yadav. According to him, after killing his wife, Kashiram met Ward Chairman Katak Bahadur Budha in Dadamadu Bazaar, 400 meters away, and told him that four unknown people had come and beaten his wife. He had fled and had to be rescued, he said.

Ward Chairman Budha, who knew about Kashiram's fighting habit, immediately informed the police, and the team reached the spot. 'He used to fight and beat him repeatedly before,' said Ward Chairman Budha, 'I never thought he would kill him.' According to him, on Chaitra 13, the police had sent the couple home by making a reconciliation document in his presence. The couple was taken into custody by local Dhir Budha and Gang Bahadur Budha with a promise not to fight.

Manpura, who got married at the age of 16, had studied up to SLC. She returned to her family after a fight within a year of her marriage. At that time, her sister-in-law Lakshmi Budha said that she was pregnant and called her husband to come and pick her up and send him home. ‘He would always beat her after drinking alcohol,’ she said, ‘He would break up the relationship without understanding her feelings, and he would kill her and ruin the children.’ Laxmi is an assistant at the Kotwada health post. She had received a message from the area police on Chaitra 13 asking her to come to take care of Nanda. She said that she could not go because there were two delivery cases at the Kotwada health post.

‘The situation had become complicated,’ she said, ‘If she had gone and brought her with her then, this would not have happened.’ Kashiram, who had gone to India to work as a laborer in November, had returned a week ago. He had gone to India to work as a laborer to pay off the debt incurred while building a house, and since returning home, he had been accusing his wife of having an affair with another man after hearing from his neighbors. Locals said that he beat his wife every day for the same reason. The couple has a 1-year-old and 4-year-old son and a 9-year-old daughter.

According to sister-in-law Laxmi, she had come to live with her mother because she had beaten him twice before that. ‘We had said that we would file a case in court and get a divorce,’ she said, ‘Kashiram apologized and took her away.’

Relatives say that Manpura managed the house despite enduring the violence, remembering the honor of her family. ‘She was married off as a child and could not study, nor did she have peace and happiness,’ Lakshmi said, ‘She lost her life prematurely while enduring the violence.’

District Police Chief Him Bahadur Khatri said that the incident occurred due to alcohol and domestic violence. ‘The deceased has deep injuries on her head and forehead,’ he said, ‘The husband has admitted to attacking her with an axe. The statement of the neighbor at the scene of the incident has also confirmed the murder.’

According to the police, at 4:15 am on Monday, the deceased’s husband Kashiram had come to the police and informed them that four unknown people had beaten and killed his wife. After that, a police team reached the scene and investigated, the husband concluded that it was a murder and arrested Kashiram.

Women's rights activist Abeksha Singh Basnet said that the increasing incidents of violence against women in Kalikot are a matter of concern. She said that 54 women and 29 children have been victims of sexual abuse, beatings, and domestic violence since Shrawan alone.
