On the occasion of April 1, i.e. ‘April Fools’, Nepal Police has launched an awareness campaign against digital fraud in a unique way through social media.

The police had published a post with a QR code on its official Facebook page at 12:15 pm on Wednesday, asking, ‘Have you had any complaints or applications filed against you?’ The post also included a picture of handcuffs, which attracted many users.

However, after scanning the QR code, the user saw a message related to ‘April Fools’ – ‘Today we joked, but tomorrow you may get scammed by a similar QR.’

The police have urged people not to scan QR codes from unknown sources and to also alert their family members.

This campaign, which was launched at a time when digital fraud incidents are increasing, has been widely discussed on social media.

Some have praised it for ‘giving an effective message even if it is biased’, while others have commented that adopting such misleading methods by official bodies may affect trust.
