Police have informed that Lumbini Provincial Assembly member Rekha Kumari Sharma has been arrested. The Provincial Assembly Secretariat issued a notice on Monday, formally informing her of Sharma's arrest.
The Provincial Assembly Secretariat stated that the plaintiff is the Government of Nepal and the defendant is Provincial Assembly member Sharma, based on a letter from the District Police Range, Kathmandu, for a crime related to children. According to the Provincial Assembly Secretariat, Sharma was arrested at 11 pm on Chaitra 15, 2082. After receiving information about the arrest, the notice was published as per Sub-rule (2) of Rule 216 of the Lumbini Provincial Assembly Rules, 2079 BS, as per the order of the Speaker, Provincial Assembly Secretary Durlabh Kumar Pun Magar said.
According to the Provincial Assembly Rules, Sub-rule 3 states that a person cannot work as a member of the Provincial Assembly after being arrested, and Sub-rule 4 states that if a charge sheet is filed for a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment for 3 years or more or an offense involving moral turpitude, the Speaker shall suspend the member of the Provincial Assembly. ‘Now, it is information that she has been arrested as per Sub-rules 2 and 3 and that she cannot work as an MP,’ he said, ‘there is no need to suspend her now.’ Sharma was elected as a proportional provincial assembly member from the CPN-UML.
She is accused of committing crimes against children by employing a minor as a domestic worker.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City had raided a girl from her house on 2081 Jestha 14 on charges of misbehaving with the girl. After that, Provincial Assembly member Sharma claimed that she had kept the girl for protection with the consent of her parents and was teaching her in a school in Kathmandu. After that, a complaint was registered at the District Police Complex, Kathmandu on 2081 Jestha 30. However, the Attorney General’s Office decided not to prosecute the complaint, which had been pending for a long time, in 2081 Magh. Then, on 29 Magh 2081, the then Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Balendra Shah, wrote a status on the social network Facebook, ‘Sari Nanu! The government has decided not to prosecute your perpetrators. Don’t panic. The time will come.’ He also mentioned that ‘to eradicate such discrimination, crimes and bring those who commit such crimes to justice, you and many other children like you should study. Society should understand.’
