A 29-year-old rape victim from Kalikot, who has been on a hunger strike for a week in Maitighar Mandal, was assaulted on Sunday. The protesters assaulted the woman because the banner hung at the protest site had two photos of accused Karna Bahadur Malla and the UML sun symbol.
The woman had started the hunger strike demanding action and justice against accused Malla. She said that some UML workers had reached there on Sunday during a protest against the arrest of party chairman KP Sharma Oli and tried to tear down the banner and when she asked, she was attacked.
According to the victim, a woman suddenly attacked her when she asked, 'Why was the banner removed?' She said, 'I don't know who she is, what she is, she suddenly attacked me without talking to me.' She pulled her hair and thrashed around.' She said that she suffered minor injuries from the woman's attack. The police took control of the situation in a short time.
The victim has complained that she has been treated unfairly even after reaching the Women's Commission, the Police Office and the UML Party Office. She said, 'I went to many places for justice, no one listened to me. I was forced to sit on a hunger strike. There was a fight here too.'
According to her, Karna Bahadur Malla from Mugu was running a security company in Lalitpur. She said that she was a live Deuda singer and earned her living by singing songs. She came into contact with Malla 2 years ago through a friend. She claims that Malla had a relationship with her by lying to her that his wife was dead and even forced her to get an abortion. After this, Malla took her out of the hospital bed and took her to the street.
The victim has also filed a complaint against Malla with the police for feticide and rape. According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Gautam Mishra, spokesperson of the District Police Range, Lalitpur, a rape case was registered against Malla on 20 February based on the victim's complaint.
An arrest warrant was issued against the accused Malla, who lives in Thankot and has a permanent residence in Mugu Dhainkot, and he was arrested on 20 March and is being investigated. According to Mishra, the investigation into the case is being prepared to be completed within 25 days and the report will be submitted to the government attorney's office along with the report. He said that the victim has filed a complaint demanding legal action against the accused and justice for her. UML Kathmandu District President Deepak Niraula said that he came to know about the incident after seeing it on social media. He informed that he did not know who committed the incident. He said, ‘We have the same right to protest against the incidents that happened to us as others do.’ What happened was tragic. An investigation is underway to find out whether it was done by the party or not.’
According to Pawan Bhattarai, spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Range, 12 people, including 2 women, have been arrested during the demonstration. However, he said that it has not been confirmed who was involved in the assault and beating of the women on hunger strike.
