The then Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, who was arrested on the recommendation of the Commission of Inquiry for allegedly suppressing the Gen-G movement and demonstration on Bhadra 23 and 24, has prepared for legal defense.
Oli had consulted with the Attorney General of the Oli government, Ramesh Badal, and senior advocate Tikaram Bhattarai before his arrest. After Oli was arrested, Badal said that he would defend himself according to all legal procedures.
‘The report of the commission itself seems to be politically vindictive. It does not match the facts and conclusions of the incident. Therefore, it seems illegal,’ he said, ‘We have started all preparations as provided by the constitution and law, including custodial interrogation.’
He accused the report of Commission Chairman Gauri Bahadur Karki of being prepared in a biased manner and not based on facts.
On Thursday, Oli, while training lawmakers at the party central office, claimed that the then Prime Minister and Home Minister did not give the order to open fire, and said that the government was not responsible for it. The cabinet meeting held immediately after Balendra Shah, a senior leader of the National Independent Party, took the oath as Prime Minister, decided to implement the Karki Commission report. UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel and various sister organizations had protested against the government's decision.
