Foreign citizens of Nepali origin who are permanent citizens of the same country in various parts of the world including Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Fiji have expressed happiness after the ‘PNO’ gave priority to Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNA).
James Karki, who has been living in Thailand for about 18 years, thanked the NRNA for taking the initiative to identify them as Nepali origin and said that he was very happy. They expressed happiness saying that the land of their ancestors is going to introduce them as People of Nepali Origin, that is, foreign citizens of Nepali origin.
Born in Thailand, he has been doing business there for a long time. ‘Since Nepal is the land of his ancestors, I wanted to visit it with respect once. The desire to visit Pashupatinath, Lumbini, and Swayambhu and give something to Nepal was incomplete in my mind,’ he says. He says that if the government accepts the issue raised by the NRNA and gives the PNO identity, he will come to Nepal with his family.
Like him, Dewan Rai, who has been living in Malaysia for a long time, is also very happy that initiatives are being taken for the identity of Nepalis of Nepali origin. He also wants to take himself and his children to Nepal with pride and say that 'this is the country of my father and ancestors'.
He feels that this will now be fulfilled. Karki and Rai are just examples. Saying that this is the common desire of all foreign citizens of Nepali origin spread across the world, the commitment to include Nepali origin Nepalis was expressed at the 12th annual meeting of NRNA.
The previous government, while addressing the PNO, had moved forward with the amendment of the citizenship law. The bill has been on hold through the Ministry of Home Affairs, Law and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. NRNA PNO Coordinator Kumar Karki expressed hope that the next government will make legal arrangements for the system of identity.
‘We have viewed the initiative taken by the government and the NRNA leadership in this regard positively,’ he said, ‘We are hopeful that the new government that will be formed soon will make legal arrangements in this regard and ensure the identity authority.’
At the general convention after the unification of the NRNA, former presidents Badri KC and Mahesh Kumar Shrestha had raised the importance of including the identity of Nepalese of Nepali origin who left Nepal three generations ago in the NRNA manifesto, raising the issue of including the identity of Nepalese of Nepali origin in the identity card. The newly elected working committee issued an important manifesto in the context of Nepalese outside Nepal and argued that since it is unopposed under the chairmanship of Dr. Hemraj Sharma, it will raise the agenda of everyone.

The Nepali Origin Nepali or PNO Committee under the Non-Resident Nepali Association has been raising the problems of PNOs at various levels of the government for a long time. Recently, it met with Foreign Ministry Secretary Amrit Kumar Rai, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Home Secretary Rajkumar Shrestha, and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry Secretary Parashwar Dhungana and reminded them of the demands they had made earlier to make legal arrangements for Nepali origin Nepalis.
The ministries related to PNO said that provisions are being made in the new act to address the demands of PNOs.
The committee has taken the demands it has put forward for the rights and interests of Nepalis around the world as a campaign to identify them and connect their descendants with Nepal. The committee has stated that the interest and concern shown by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the leadership of the Non-Resident Nepali Association regarding Nepalese of Nepali origin in various technical sessions, opening and closing sessions recently organized by the Non-Resident Nepali Association has been taken as the basis for finalizing this issue.

Despite the long time since the establishment of the NRNA, the cultural rights of People of Nepali Origin, i.e. Nepalese of Nepali origin, have been a topic of discussion for the past few years. The PNOs are confident that the current newly elected committee will take serious and solution-oriented action on this issue.
