Heavy rain and lightning that hit on Monday evening have caused major damage in some districts of the country. Power supply has been disrupted in some places due to fallen poles, while problems have also arisen on highways in some places.

Monday's heavy rain and lightning have disrupted power supply in Ramechhap. Power supply, which was disrupted since around 6 pm on Monday evening, has not been restored till Monday morning. According to locals, the windstorm that hit on Sunday was the strongest in the last 10 years.

Residents of Manthali have said that such a powerful windstorm has occurred for the first time since 2072 BS. The Nepal Electricity Authority Ramechhap Distribution Center has stated that power supply has been suspended across the district after both 33 kV transmission lines coming from Khimti and Sindhuli to Manthali Sub-Station were disrupted due to the windstorm.

The information issued by the distribution center mentions that problems have arisen in power lines in various places due to windstorm, rain and lightning. The NEA staff is currently deployed in the field to find possible faults and efforts are being made to restore electricity service as soon as possible, the center said.

According to the NEA, trees and branches may have fallen on the line due to the wind, foreign objects may have gotten stuck in the wire, the wire may have snapped or the pole may have fallen, so operating the line without a complete inspection can be risky.

Similarly, if there is a suspicion that someone's meter or wiring has been damaged due to lightning, the Nepal Electricity Authority Ramechhap Distribution Center has urged consumers to immediately turn off the main switch and stay safe.

Blocked highway operation

Similarly, the highway that was blocked in Dhankuta due to the rain accompanied by storms on Monday night has been opened on Tuesday morning. The Koshi Highway, which was blocked due to the tree falling, has now been opened from 8 am. The Nepal Army's Bhim Dal Battalion in Saleri has opened the road.

Government offices and private houses have also been damaged due to the storm. According to Dhankuta Chief District Officer Binod Kumar Khadka, the Division Forest Office at the district headquarters, District Ayurveda Hospital, Dhankuta Multiple Campus, Dhankuta Municipal Drinking Water and Sanitation Consumer Committee Office and the Chhintang Gulma Barracks of the Armed Police Force have been damaged.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Armed Police Prem Prakash Sigdel, the wind has blown off the roofs of buildings in various places and damaged structures. Locals have said that more than a dozen houses in the Balmandir area of Dhankuta Municipality-5 have blown off the roofs. Similarly, large trees have fallen in the Hatiya, where the weekly market is held on Thursdays, damaging shops.

Electricity disruption in Khotang too

Electricity has also been disrupted in Khotang due to Monday's windstorm. The 33 kV transmission line brought from Jaljale in Udayapur and the 33 kV transmission line connected to Solu have been damaged, affecting about 30,000 families since Monday evening.

Nepal Electricity Authority Technical Chief Ram Bahadur Shrestha said that it has not been possible to determine where the damage occurred so far. ‘We have not yet determined where the damage occurred, but it seems that there has been a lot of damage.’
