Targeting Thursday's election, major hospitals across the country, including Bir Hospital, have formed 'Rapid Response Teams'. Hospitals have said that the teams have been formed to manage emergency medical services since there is a long public holiday due to the election.
The Election Commission had earlier directed the government to arrange emergency medical treatment at the polling stations. After that, the Ministry of Health had issued a circular to hospitals and health institutions to arrange emergency medical services during the election as well.
Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai had issued a press release urging hospitals and health institutions to keep health workers on standby. The Commission has issued a circular to all 753 local levels through the Ministry of Federal Affairs to provide emergency medical assistance at the polling stations. The order has been made to ensure primary health care at each polling station to resolve any emergency health problems that may arise for voters, employees and security personnel.
The Commission had also directed the Ministry of Health and Population to prepare hospitals, health institutions, doctors, health workers and medicines across the country. The circular was issued to provide essential and emergency medical services. Although the OPD services of most hospitals will be closed on election day, emergency treatment services will remain operational.
A team has been formed at Bir Hospital under the coordination of Dr. Suresh Prasad Nepal, the head of the Emergency Department. The team includes health workers including doctors and nurses. Director Janardan Panthi informed that a team has been formed to make emergency treatment services effective at Rapti Institute of Health Sciences, Dang. He informed that in order to keep the necessary medicines and equipment in good condition, doctors, nursing and paramedical staff will provide service immediately if an emergency siren call or a message is received from the emergency department.
The Civil Service Hospital has stated that it will continue the service by forming an emergency health treatment management committee under the coordination of the head of the medical division. Bharatpur Hospital has stated that emergency and intimate services will remain operational even though the OPD is closed during the public holiday during the election. The hospital has stated that the OPD and administrative services will be operational at the hospital from 23 Falgun.
The government has declared public holidays on 20-22 Falgun due to the election. TU Teaching Hospital has stated that the hospital's day services will be closed during this time, except for emergency and intimate services. According to the hospital's executive director, Dr. Subas Prasad Acharya, only morning sessions will be conducted on 20, 22 and 24 Falgun.
Lumbini Provincial Hospital Butwal has formed an Emergency Health Treatment Management Committee under the coordination of Dr. Nurul Hoda, head of the Emergency Department. The hospital has said that on the election day, at least one chief physician and two other physicians will be deployed in the surgery, medicine, orthopedic, dental, radiology and laboratory departments in addition to regular duties.
